Seeds of compassion 2008

We can all learn something from his Holiness. We did on his recent tour of Seattle as we attended a dialougue he had with recording artist Dave Mathew's for the Seeds of compassion movement. His wisdom is needed and appreciated. We learned to have compassion for others that are suffering as well as to forgive those who's actions may cause us harm. We are all stuck on this planet together and for the most part similar to what we want in life. Peace, Happiness and love. It's our duty to share this seed with the younger generations in hope that we can someday have a peaceful world. Our prayers are with him and his people during these difficult times. We pray that Tibet and China will soon live together in harmony.

We feel strongly about having the ability to produce quality custom surfboards and share this ideal with the tools we use to build them. We take the time to understand individual wants and needs in order to increase profitability and success. Our goal is to develop affordable solutions for individuals and unique applications that enhance the user experiance. We streamlined our "Precision Shaper3 Surfboard Shaping machine" from the two previous versions PS1 and PS2. The PS3 Servo motors were replaced by high powered quality stepper motors. Frame is a combo of steel and aluminum to offer adjustabilty with additional strength. All gearing/motors fully enclosed in the gantry which rolls on dual 1" rails. Quick change cutter system allows the ability to take advantage of a plethora of cutter shapes and sizes for design specific applications. ALl parts made in the USA and are easy to access. True and ready open design "change the hold down mechanism and the skies the limit". Operator is protected by 1/2" steel end plates. Unit measures 15'x4'x7'. Simple to maintain and clean. Getting her ready for break down and paint she's heading south to warmer climates....

Choices and individualism

We get excited thinking about the freedom of choice available to all surfers in 08. Whether it be the type of foam that makes up the core of your board, the resin that is used to encapsulate it or the obtuse angles of a unique looking fin design. Now more then ever before the walls of design are beeing not only broken but accepted. It has been this advice we have shared for many years " you wont know until you try ".. This idealism was passed to me by my father. Each of us are individuals that have specific abilities and needs to help us optimize our surfing experiance or life experiance in general. Dont fall into the trap of standardization " is that a word? " Ride as many differenty materials, shapes and fins that you can dont be afraid of something that may look a bit unusual.. A friend of mine has a very unusual looking wife but she is the love of his life!!!!!!!

I cant wait to try these!!!!!!!!!!

Wanted to welcome San Diego Native Chris Jafay and his wife Step to our team. Chris will be the face man dealing with our NW retailers. The last year he has gained extensive knowledge about our design concepts and how they integrate into the waves we surf in the PNW! He is a solid surfer with years of experiance that has a knack of finding surfers the cinderella slipper of surfboards. Currently he is testing a new board that sports full length double concaves running vee off the stringer. Were hoping to unstick the feel of the single cc in some of the waves up here that are less powerfull..

Right down from Dads house on Ali'i drive past Banyans on the side of the road facing lyman's you'll find Chris perched under a tree creating paintings of the waves and the land he is surrounded by. His art is becoming famous fast and has been featured on a few surf vids so if you are on the big Island stop by and check out his work.

Glass and your board...

Fiberglass makes up the skin of your board. It typically is fiberglass cloth and some sort of resin polyester or epoxy. There are different types of laminating techniques.

1. The hand laminate which is used on traditional surfboards

2. Composite which is found on S-tech and Boardwoks boards.

Both constructions have positives and negatives nothing is perfect...

We would like to take a bit a time to educate some as we have learned that their are many misconceptions about glassing especially in the NW territory..

Let's talk standard Polyurethane foam and good old polyester resin cured with MEKP.. This constructions strength for the most part is found in the core or blank that is used. Lighter glass=less weight=more float and provides max flex and recoil in a board.. This is what makes them fun to ride. Unfortunately the board will dent on the deck while breaking in and will not look cosmetically appealing. The trade is in the ride! Adding glass to a board adds weight but it also will allow the board to dent less. This really doesnt add life to the board as all boards can break it will however look new longer and will help keep its resell value..

So the moral of the post is if you want a board to last a longtime and are willing to sacrafice performance get your stick glassed heavier. If you are into surfing each wave with the highest possible stoke and dont care if your stick looks as if she went through a war get it glassed lighter.

This is personal prefference and is a advantage that custom board builders offer serious surfers..

We had to add one of these to the mix. We widened the tail of our XSB shortboard added a bump wing and a diamond tail. You guessed it! It's a quad! A deep single concave and the perfect rocker combination. I bet you will be seeing plenty of these in the water soon..

Another popular NW board. The original was released in 2004 and rocked a wing swallow. The GSk8.2 shows a double wing rounded pin. We changed the rocker to mimic our F2X ( a more balanced curve ) and added more vee through the tail. The same fin principle applies to her as our F2X. A wave catching machine and a great vehicle to level the plying field when those longboarders lurk...

We have received amazing feedback on this design and it is becoming one of our most sought after boards. We find the future vector fins to work well when the waves are head high and over. Standard foil fiberglass fins work really well with the design in smaller surf..

The F2X is what we consider a hybrid fishesque board that is built for speed but will also allow it's pilot to pull of some insane maneuvers..

What not to say to a shaper/board designer

I need you to make me a super fast board that will be super loose yet hold tight when it gets steep. I need the board to be strong but light. I would like it to paddle really easy and catch lots of waves. I have picked a color swatch from home depot to match the art I will draw and expect you to copy perfectly. I need it to keep speed through cutbacks and make large spray. I need to have the newest gimmick fins developed by NASA. I used to get team rider deals from my last shaper 10 years ago when I surfed the local amateure contests. Can you hook me up?

I know its hard as we all expect the most out of our new custom vehicle. Remember shapers/designers work hard to produce something custom for you. "Magic is not a constant that is what makes it special" Sometimes allowing the shaper to do his thing will actually get you a better stick. Boards are a labor of love. Respect, patience will go a long way.....

This 9'x22x2.55 was made custom for Andrew Cordeiro to surf in the 2007 Cleanwater Classic and the Surfing and Traditions contest in Lapush Washington. The board features a sculpted single to double concave running to slight vee off the tail. A performance rocker was added as well as the Probox Hawaii adjustable fin system. She was built in less then 48 hours out of a Surfblanks Australia blue core and Resin Research epoxy. The board is extremely light. We wish Andrew the best of luck at these events.

Our original glasser Dave Glazier is now back with us. It is exciting as Daves impeccable work, passion for surf, building tight and light boards will no doubt help our process. Dave worked with us in 1995 and was forced to move in 1999. Well he's back and we look forward to his helping hands..

Dave is a talented epoxy/polyester laminator, sander and artist. He is dedicated and works relentless to produce high quality surfboards

Welcome to the Precision Shapes Northwest Blog

We are a group of implant surfers that have made the PNW their home since 1989. We are passionate about surfing and surfboards and consider our research and development a discipline. Our goal is to perpetuate the art of designing and building high performance-user friendly surf craft. We are capable of merging the past and the future utilizing and leveraging our technology to increase the probability of producing stoke. Whats happening?????

It is really exciting around the Precision Shapes camp. We will be relaunching our X-isle line of surfboards. Our Xisle line will prove to be a work in progress as both Kalani and Ewaliko split the responsibility of designing each individual board . Our Xisle boards are meant to bring our very different design concepts together. We will focus on more tame staple designs " standard shortboards and funboards, your basic thruster designs " This will not hinder the development of our current line of boards. Check out our boards page as we will be adding Xisle to our line up.

We will finally be adding kalani's designs to our website sometime in late June. His knowledge of the PNW surf conditions and unique fishesque designs will no doubt be well sought after.. Keep an eye out for his concave deck diamond tail twinzer that has received raving reviews with both the Washington and Oregon crowd..

Ewaliko has been burning the candle focused on a new GSK8 model and a more performance quad fin. The GSK8II will sport a double wing rounded pin tail. He has made a rocker adjustment that is more like his F2X and at this time he says the quad fin will stay. His new quad shortboard will be similar to his Xwing outline it will be available in both diamond and squash tail. The Ol'O blunt longboard " Not pictured on the boards page " has received rave reviews by a few of the westport locals. The Ol'O Blunt has a much different hull then his Ol'O Longboard. Typical blunt dimensions are 9'1"x22.15"x2.9"

We have been hard at work developing our Precision Shapes MFG tools. We have a big surprise that will be released sometime in Late June. Our goals have always been to assist dedicated manufacturers. We are so stoked on what we are doing it makes the days fly by. Check back on our MFG page we should have it up mid to late June.
